Abstract

Naturally occurring base-exhanging clays such as natrolith are burnt say at 700 DEG C. and then treated successively with a solution of a neutral salt such as calcium chloride and with a solution of waterglass, whereby an insoluble precipitate is formed which stabilizes the clay during its use for softening water. A treatment with a solution of waterglass may precede the treatment with calcium chloride; and the burning of the raw clay may be omitted or the temperature of burning be substantially reduced.
