Manures.-In preparing a phosphatic fertilizer containing sodium dicalcium phosphate and calcium orthosilicate by heating a mixture of natural phosphate, sodium sulphate or chloride and silica in the presence of steam as in the parent Specification, only half a molecule of silicic acid is used to each molecule of phosphoric acid when sodium chloride or sulphate or a mixture of these is the alkali used. If lime not bound to phosphate is present, enough silica is added to convert it to calcium orthosilicate. Any iron or argillaceous earth present can replace the silicic acid and form calcium ferrite and calcium aluminate.
