Abstract

The spent or waste lime sludge consisting of calcium carbonate mixed with much water, which is a by-product in the alkali and other industries, is converted into a substantially dry and readily-handled product suitable for liming acid land and other purposes by the addition of quicklime. Sufficient of the latter may be added to dry the sludge completely, or only a small amount may be stirred with the mud, in any pan-vessel or rotary drier and desiccation effected by the application of heat. The mixture of calcium carbonate and hydrate which results may be converted wholly into carbonate by passing furnace or other gases containing carbon-dioxide through the mass.
