Abstract

Finely ground magnesite, dolomite, &c. is mixed with finely-ground fuel, and formed into porous shaped bodies, e.g. using a rotary drum, preferably employing water as the binding agent, and the bodies are subjected to blast-roasting, e.g. in a Dwight-Lloyd apparatus at a temperature above that of decomposition of magnesium carbonate, but below that at which dead burning of the magnesia occurs, e.g. at 600-1000 DEG C. 6-12 per cent fuel (for magnesite) or 4-8 per cent (for dolomite) may be used. Calcium carbonate present in the ore is not decomposed; a portion of the magnesium carbonate present in dolomite may also remain undecomposed.
