Abstract
Activated carbon is produced by exposing raw material rich in carbon, e.g. wood, bituminous coal, lignite, nut shells, spent coffee grounds, peat, tar, coal tar or petroleum pitches, to the action of an activating agent consisting of an oxychloride of an alkaline earth metal containing free or combined water, such as magnesium oxychloride, at over 600 DEG C. to generate hydrochloric acid gas. The carbonaceous material is mixed with magnesia and concentrated aqueous magnesium chloride solution of 27-32 DEG Baume ("Sorel" cement) is added to produce a plastic dough, which is dried in air for 1-3 hours and allowed to set. The mass is then heated to 650-800 DEG C. in a kiln or muffle furnace, and the product is crushed, extracted with hydrochloric acid solution, filtered, washed, treated with weak ammonia liquor and dried at 100 DEG C.
