Abstract
In the manufacture of dead burnt magnesia or magnesia containing mixtures, a slurry of the finely divided raw material is treated in an internally-heated rotary kiln which is so operated that the gas velocity at or near the gas exit of the kiln is between 125 and 225 feet per minute. The gas velocity may be brought within the required limits by control devices by use of a kiln having a sufficiently large cross sectional area, by increasing the diameter of the kiln at the feed end, or by cooling the gases. The maximum temperature to which the charge is raised may be between 1350 and 1750 DEG C. and the temperature of the kiln at the feed end may be about 300 DEG C. In the case of magnesium oxide slurry obtained from sea water the free water content should be between 45 and 65 per cent and for dolomite slurry between 5 and 20 per cent.
