Abstract
Dead burned refractories are produced by passing briquettes of magnesia, dolomite, lime or mixtures thereof into the upper end of a vertical shaft kiln, supplying heat at an intermediate zone of the kiln to heat the briquettes in the zone to the dead burning temperature, passing air upwardly through the lower end of the kiln, moving the briquettes down the kiln at a rate such that from their entry into the kiln they are heated at a rate not exceeding 200 DEG F. per minute until they reach a temperature of at least 2000 DEG F. and withdrawing dead burned briquettes from the lower end of the kiln.
