Class 51(ii) In a tunnel furnace cold air is blown into a flue or flues 1 arranged in the upper part of the cooling zone, Fig. 1, and of the firing zone, Fig. 2, whereby the air in passing through the flue or flues is heated, the heated air then passing into a flue or flues 1A arranged in the lower part of the pre-heating zone, Fig. 3, in such manner as to cause transverse movements of air or gas in all zones; in the cooling zone the hot air rises through the products being treated, is cooled in contact with the flue or flues and moves laterally before descending, in the firing zone the hot air and gas from burners 9 are cooled in passing downwards through the products under treatment and in the pre-heating zone the heated air carries out an ascending and then a lateral movement and then passes downwards through the products under treatment. The products are carried through the furnace on trucks 4.
