Abstract
349,745. Gas-fired furnaces. WELLMAN SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION, Ltd., and SOWARD, H. W., Victoria Station House, London. May 1, 1930, No. 13448. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii).] In a furnace for melting or the heat treatment of metals in which the flames and products of combustion pass continuously in one direction through the heating-chamber, gas is supplied through a central port and air is admitted in the form of converging streams through ports arranged on each side of the gas port and through a port. arranged above the gas port. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2. air entering at 17, 18 passes through a flue 19 beneath the hearth 20 and thence through a flue 3 in the roof to converging air ports 6, 7 at the sides. of the gas port 5 and to an air port 8 above the gas port. An adjustable plate 9 at the base of the port 8 may direct the air entering through the latter port along the upper part of the heating- chamber. The air and gas are delivered into a mixing-chamber 4 the side walls of which are directed towards each other. The gases escape from the furnace through a flue 23 arranged above the air flue and serve to heat the air.
