Abstract

1,274,622. Continuous multiple chamber furnaces. SIGRI ELEKTROGRAPHIT G.m.b.H. 19 April, 1971 [21 Feb., 1970; 5 March- 1970], No. 20506/71. Heading F4B. In the firing of shaped carbon bodies in a continuous multiple chamber furnace with twenty treatment chambers fired in turn, flue gases from chamber 1 presently being fired are cooled in chamber 6 by water sprays 26 when the temperature indicated by a thermocouple 28 rises unduly rapidly. The gases are being extracted from chamber 12 by a conduit 21 opening into a main flue 22. Chamber 16 is open to the air which after cooling the treated bodies in the remaining chambers passes from chamber 20 to chamber 1 for use as combustion air. In a modification (Fig. 1) cooling air is supplied to chamber 6 through nitrogen, carbon dioxide or other inert gas or vapour could be used. The evolution of gases or over-vigorous combustion of these gases are thus controlled. More than one chamber may be fired or cooled at one time.
