Abstract

Nitrogen or nitrogen-hydrogen mixtures are obtained by passing a mixture of ammonia and air through a chamber occupied, at least partly, by a refractory solid material, e.g. fireclay or alumina brick, maintained at a high temperature, e.g. 1000 DEG C., by the heat of combustion, so that cracking and combustion occur in one operation. The refractory material may be coated with a suitable catalyst if desired. The reaction is started by heating the material by the combustion of, for example, coal gas. Suitable apparatus comprises a cylindrical chamber having the top and sides lined with refractory material, and having broken refractory material in the central cavity, supported on a horizontal grid. The gases are passed downwardly through the material. Specification 390,870 is referred to.
