Abstract

In the production of non-oxidizing gaseous mixtures for use in metal-heating furnaces by the controlled combustion of air and cracked ammonia, the burnt gases are passed over a catalyst to remove traces of free oxygen, and <PICT:0473697/III/1> control of temperature is effected by returning a regulated quantity of cooled burnt gases to the combustion chamber. The apparatus shown comprises a cylindrical vessel 1 lined with refractory and heat-insulating materials 2, 3, and divided by a perforated wall 9 into two chambers. Ammonia is supplied to the burner 10 through the cracking-coil 13, and air by the blower 30, and the products of combustion pass through a perforated baffle 15, catalytic gauzes 14, and the wall 9 to the chamber 8 containing a cooling coil 18 and the baffle 19. The products are exhausted through the pipe 32 and a part is returned by a blower 35 either to the burner 10 or to the combustion chamber through the pipe 20. A part of the products may also be led to the air blower 30 through the connection 34, and air may be supplied to the combustion chamber through the pipe 39. Nickel, copper and palladium gauzes may be used as catalysts.
