Abstract
732,814. Cracking gaseous mixtures; oil gas. HASCHE, R. L. July 31, 1953 [Oct. 2, 1952], No. 21306/53. Class 55 (2). [Also in Group XIII] . A gas interchangeable with town gas is produced in a regenerative furnace comprising two regenerative masses 3, 4, each in a separate chamber, and a connecting chamber 6 containing a burner 11. The contiguous ends of the masses 3, 4 are heated to 1000‹ F. by burner 11. A gaseous mixture of air and hydrocarbon is then passed through pipe 9 to mass 3, the amount of air being controlled to provide by combustion of a portion of the starting hydrocarbon sufficient heat for the endothermic alteration of the remainder of the starting hydrocarbon. The gaseous mixture is heated in passing through mass 3 and partial combustion and endothermic alterations take place in chamber 6, the hot gases from which pass through and heat up mass 4, and are thereby cooled. At the same time mass 3 is becoming cooler and eventually it becomes necessary to reverse the flow through the masses so that mass 4 is giving up heat and mass 3 is receiving heat. Alternatively, an intermittent process may be operated, in which the furnace is brought to operating temperature and is heated up at intervals, during which time the production of gas is stopped. Specifications 697,108, [Group XIII], 699,318, 705,393, and 716,814 are referred to.
