Abstract
A process for heating materials at high temperatures in a furnace with a flame as the source of heat, which consists in interposing a layer of gas between the material and the flame so that radiant heat only acts on the charge, is applicable for manufacture of lime. The charge is supported on a perforated or pervious hearth, and steam is supplied to form the gaseous intervening layer.
