Chemical manufacture, furnaces for. - In a mechanical furnace for use in the manufacture of salt cake by a one stage process, the muffle is made of a refractory acid-resisting brick or stone material. The furnace may be fired by a mixture of producer and water gas, and the waste heat of the combustion products may be used for preheating air and for generating steam for the water-gas plant.
