Abstract

Filtering.-Blast-furnace and like combustible gases are superheated prior to filtration by the direct introduction into them of a hot current which either gives its heat up to the gases or supports the combustion of a portion of the gases with consequent evolution of heat. Fig. 1 shows apparatus wherein the gas to be purified passes over a heating-coil 2 through which flows a hot current which is cooled by the gas to a temperature below the ignition point of the gas and either passed through a nozzle 4 into the gas or diverted by a valve 5 into the open air as at starting or stoppage of the purifier. The casing of the superheater 1 through which the gas passes is lagged with fire-clay or brickwork 6. Fig. 2 shows a forced-draught furnace or gas burner which supplies a hot current to the gas to be purified. Compressed air enters the cylindrical combustion chamber 1 by a pipe 2, and gas enters by a pipe 3. The ignition port 6 may be covered by an observation glass. The chamber may have a filling of firebrick or other refractory material. The combustion products at starting may escape by a port 7, afterwards being passed through a watercooled valve 8 to mix with the gas to be cleaned.
