Abstract

Hydrogen.-In the production of hydrogen by treatment of water gas with slaked lime, the latter is used in the form of granules or hollow lumps in order to prevent the choking of pipes &c. which occurs when powdered or milk of lime is used, and the water gas is prepared at a temperature of 1200‹ C. Retorts 24 are filled with hollow lumps of slaked lime made by mixing lime and the necessary amount of water in a pug-mill, shaping and drying in an oven. The slaked lime rests on screens 14 and the retorts are heated by burners 29. Water gas after passing through a water-cooled coil 32 enters a chamber 25 having a removable cover 26, air being carefully excluded by the use of a jointing ring 10. A similar ring 16 is provided for the chamber 27 which receives the hydrogen from the retorts. The latter are set in a double walled casing, insulation material 23 being inserted between the walls. A similar furnace is used for producing the water gas, but the gas stream passes in an upward instead of a downward direction.
