Abstract

5005. Jaubert, G. F. March 4, 1911, [Convention date]. [Addition to 9623/11.] Hydrogen is prepared in a closed vessel by the auto-combustion of a metal, metalloid, or alloy, previously heated to a very high temperature, in the presence of water vapour as the only oxidant, thus: 3FeSi6 + 40H2O = Fe3O4 + 18SiO2 + 40H,. The most suitable bodies are ferro-alloys, particularly of silicon, aluminium, manganese and calcium. The adition of an alkaline base, for instance lime, is advantageous. In carrying out the process continuously, the material treated may be introduced through a hopper c into a refractory tank a provided with an aperture b for discharging the resulting scoria, a water or water-vapour supply-pipe f embedded in the walls and having injection nozzles g opening into the tank, and, lastly, a hydrogendischarge pipe h. The kindling is effected in any suitable manner, as by means of a pill of gunpowder &c. which is ignited with an ordinary match. As required, metal in powder or small particles is introduced through the hopper c, with or without the addition of an alkaline base, while the scoria are withdrawn through the aperture b provided.
