648,965. Gas manufacture. SOUTH EASTERN GAS BOARD. June 9, 1947, No. 15145. [Class 55(ii)] Combustible gases are produced from hydrocarbon oils by heating, from 500‹C. to a maximum temperature of 750‹-1200‹ C., a mixture of the oil and steam, while in contact with a catalyst consisting of the oxide or carbonate of Li, Na or K, or the oxide of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Al, Ti, Zr or Th, or a mixture of two or more of these metal compounds. In Fig. 1, steam and oil are supplied through pipes 10, 11 and a preheater 17, to one or other of the catalyst vessels 19a, 19b. Combustible gases pass off either through the pipe 28 or the pipe 29 and through the heatexchanger 18 which incorporates the preheater 17. The catalyst chamber which is not in use for gas production, is heated to the temperature necessary for its next run by the admission of air, or air plus hot combustion gases through a valve 22 or 24, whereby the carbonaceous deposit in the catalyst is burned, waste gases being led off through one or other of the valves 30, 31. In a modification, the catalyst is passed continuously through a reaction zone, to which the mixture of steam and hydrocarbon oil is admitted, from a feed hopper to a receiving hopper, the catalyst being returned to the former by a current of air, or air plus hot combustion gases, the temperature of the catalyst being raised to the reaction level during the transfer by combustion of the carbonaceous deposits.
