In a cyclic process of gas manufacture comprising the cracking of fluid hydrocarbons mixed or not with steam or oxidizing media in one stage by contact with a refractory or catalyst mass and heating up the plant in a second stage, oxygen-containing heating. gases for burning away carbon deposits in this stage are heated by heat recovery from heating gases of lower or no oxygen content produced in the same stage. In a modification in the initial part of the stage the combustion products are not passed through the gas making chamber. In another arrangement air for the heating stage is preheated by heat exchange with the products of carbon burning leaving the gas making chamber.
