Gas-producing furnaces. - Nitric oxide is produced by burning combustible gas with air under approximately atmospheric pressure, the combustible gas or the air or both being preheated to such an extent that the necessary high temperature is obtained by the combustion, and the gases of combustion are then cooled suddenly upon the surface of a steam boiler. The apparatus described comprises heaters 1, 2 for heating the fuel gas and 3, 4 for heating, the air. Gas is supplied at 15 and air at 16. The mixture is burnt in one pair of chambers, for instance 1 and 3, the gases of combustion being discharged to waste by exits 5, 6. When these chambers are hot enough, the necessary valves are operated so that gas and air pass through the heaters 3 and 1 respectively and thence through valves 17, 19 to a burner 21, the gases burning in a chamber containing a water-tube boiler 22. While this is taking place, the other pair of heaters 2, 4 are being heated by burning gas in them, the gases of combustion being discharged through the outlets 5, 6 and the two pairs of heaters work alternately. The temperature of the burning gases is much higher than that used in ordinary boilers and the water may be circulated by means of a pump d, Fig. 2, upon a pipe a containing the upper and lower chambers b, c of the boiler.
