Abstract

768,626. Oil gas. UNITED GAS IMPROVEMENT CO. April 25, 1955 [April 30, 1954], No. 11856/55. Class 55 (2). A cyclic process for producing an oil gas of high calorific value comprises, in one part of the cycle, passing through lines 10 and 11, or 19, a vaporized normally liquid petroleum hydrocarbon and steam into a hot zone 1 containing a catalyst 5 having a temperature gradient not greater than about 100‹ F. and consisting of nickel-containing refractory bodies having a mass between about 95-1000 lb. per 100 sq. ft. of surface and a nickel concentration, In the outer <SP>1</SP>/ 32 inch of surface,- of between 1.4 and 4 lb. per 100 sq. ft. of surface, at a rate to give a value between 2 and 6 for the ratio: then, before the temperature in the catalyst zone falls appreciably more than 100‹ F:, discontinuing the flow of hydrocarbon and steam and reheating the catalyst zone and regenerating the catalyst by burning off the carbon and sulphur deposited. During reheating of the catalyst fluid fuel and air are admitted through lines 7 and 8 to a combustion chamber 4 and the hot gases are passed through the zone 1 to leave through the stack valve 9. Carbon and sulphur are burnt off by admission of air, preferably before the reheating of the catalyst begins, and subsequently after reheating the catalyst is reduced back to the metal by admission of a reducing gas, e.g. producer gas, or the reduction may be effected in the initial stages of the gas-making period. Steam for the process when admitted at 19 is superheated by the chequerwork 17 and is employed at a rate between 0.8 and 3 lb. per pound of carbon in the petroleum hydrocarbon reactant. Air may also be admitted during the gas-making period and the temperature in the hot zone may be between 1400-1700‹ F. The temperature swing during the cycle is not more than 100‹ F. and the complete cycle lasts between 1.5-3 minutes, the gas-making period taking up 35-55 per cent of the cycle. The concentration of nickel in the catalyst is preferably between 2 and 3 lb. per 100 sq. ft. of surface and the ratio is preferably between 3 and 5. Specification 740,634 is referred to.
