In a cyclic process for making combustible gas from fluid hydrocarbons, the hot products from the gas-making chamber 14 in the gasmaking phase are passed through each of two heat regenerators 10 and 12 alternately, gasefication medium being passed to the gas-making chamber through that one of the regenerators 10 and 12 which is not at the time being traversed by the gas-making products, the arrangement being such that during the plantheating phase the heating gases do not pass through the regenerators 10 and 12. In the apparatus shown there is also provided two airpreheating regenerators 11 and 13 and during a plant heating phase one of these regenerators is being traversed by air used in reheating the gas-making chamber 14 while the other is being traversed by the hot combustion products from the chamber 14. The chamber 14 is provided with a catalyst contact mass and oil is sprayed over the upper surface of the mass from a spray 16. Supplementary heating means are provided in the bottom of regenerators 11 and 13 and heavy fuel oil or tar may be burnt therein. In a modified apparatus an indirect heatexchanger replaces the two air-preheating regenerators. Specification 756,386 is referred to.
