In a cyclic process of gas manufacture by cracking a fluid hydrocarbon with steam &c., in contact with a catalyst the gas making phase is effected in two stages, first during which both hydrocarbon and gasification medium are introduced and second when the medium only is supplied ; the make gas during stage one is passed through a heat storage mass and gasification medium in stage two is heated thereby on its way to the gas making chamber. In a preferred embodiment the make gas from the second stage is passed through another heat storage mass through which gasification medium for the first stage is passed. Specification 738,903 is referred to.
