The reaction chamber 1 of an apparatus used in a cyclic and catalytic process for making gas from liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons and steam comprises air and fuel feeds 3 and 4 to a burner and inlets 5 and 6 for gas-making hydrocarbon and steam respectively, combustion gases from the burner during a heating phase passing downwardly through the bed of catalyst and the space between the burner and the bed of catalyst being free of checkerwork.
