Abstract

In a cyclic catalytic process for producing <PICT:0923388/III/1> a combustible gas of low calorific value and tar, during a gas-making phase a mixture of air and steam is passed upwardly through a heating zone 1 into a chamber 2 where it meets a liquid hydrocarbon admitted through line 6, the resulting mixture being passed through a zone 3 containing a bed of catalyst to complete the reaction. The gaseous products containing tar from zone 3 are withdrawn through a regenerator 4 and outlet-valve 18. During a heating phase air is admitted through line 8 heated in regenerator 4 and passed through the bed of catalyst in zone 3 into the chamber 2. Additional heat is supplied to the heater 1 from a burner 19. In a modification the air admitted during a gas-making phase may be introduced directly into the chamber 2. The gas-making phase may be followed by a steam purge during which a supply of air is continued.
