In a cyclic process of converting a hydrocarbon gas of high calorific value to a combustible gas of lower calorific value there is a gas-making phase in which a non-combustible mixture of the hydrocarbon gas, air and steam is passed through a heated bed of a catalyst, an intermediate phase of predetermined duration, a heating phase in which the bed of catalyst is reheated by combustion of a combustible mixture of gas and air, and another phase of predetermined duration, the end of the gasmaking and heating phases being determined by the temperature of the bed of catalyst. Both the phases of predetermined duration may be steam purge phases or phases in which the composition of the gases supplied to the conversion zone is progressively varied from that required for a gas-making phase to that required for a heating phase and vice versa. In apparatus for carrying out the process there is a cylindrical conversion zone 1 containing a bed of catalyst 2 and to which is supplied, during a gas-making phase, a mixture of hydrocarbon gas, air and steam through line 8 and, during a heating phase, a combustible mixture of gas and air through line 9. Lines 8 and 9 terminate in a nozzle which enables the gases supplied to be introduced into the zone 1 tangentially to the inner wall of the zone. Purging steam is introduced through line 12.
