Abstract

687,766. Generating oil gas. KOPPERS GES., H. June 18, 1951 [June 17, 1950], No. 14424/51. Class 55 (ii). In a process for making combustible gas, which may be used as towns gas, from liquid fuels such as mineral oil, coal tar oil, distillation residues &c. the fuel is first divided by heating into a vaporous and a liquid portion, the liquid portion then being partially combusted with oxygen or oxygen-enriched air to produce combustible gas at a high temperature, whilst the vaporous portion is injected into this gas to undergo cracking. The apparatus consists of two parts, a lined reaction chamber 1 and an oil heater and vaporizer 2. The chamber 1 is provided with ports 4 containing nozzles 5 through which a mixture of hot oil from pipe 7 and oxygen or oxygenenriched air from pipe 6 is injected into the chamber. Steam may also be injected, with the oil-oxygen mixture. The oil ignites and the combustion gases, consisting largely of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, pass up through the chamber to meet a stream o oil vapour injected through nozzles 8. Hydrocarbon gases such as natural gas may be injected with the vapour. The vapour is cracked by the high temperature to form permanent gas which, admixed with the products of the partial combustion of the liquid oil, discharge through an outlet 10. The oil pretreatment apparatus consists of a kettle 13 traversed by tubes 15 through which pass the hot gases generated by a burner 14. Oil is filled into the kettle toa level 20 and, in operation, oil vapour collects in a space 21 whence it is led by a pipe 9 to the nozzles 8. Hot liquid oil is withdrawn by the pipe 7 to feed the nozzles. 5. The calorific value and specific gravity of the generated gas is controlled by adjusting the proportion of liquid oil to oil vapour by regulation of the burner 14 and by recirculation of a part of the waste gas through a pipe 22.
