Abstract

<PICT:0682129/III/1> In a process for the production of lime or magnesia with the simultaneous generation of combustible gas, solid fuels such as coal, pitch or oil shale or liquid fuels such as tar, crude oil, shale oil, &c., are heated in contact with calcium or magnesium carbonate by partial combustion of the fuel in air, the proportion of carbonate to fuel not exceeding 4 to 1. When using solid fuel, a mixture of one part of fuel with one or two parts of limestone is charged into a kiln 1. Air is admitted to the bed through pipes 7 and 9 and producer gas and distillation gas discharge through an outlet 12. Burnt lime and ashes are removed via an extractor 16. When using oil &c. the liquid is injected through pipes 13 into a bed of limestone. The oil is vaporized and cracked by heat generated by the combustion of deposited carbon in the lower part of the furnace.
