Abstract

686,181. Coking bituminous fuels. KOPPERS CO., Inc. Dec. 7, 1949 [Dec. 7, 1948], No. 31422/49. Class 55 (i). Finely divided coke is obtained from bituminous uels such as pitch, asphalt, mineral oil residues and bituminous coal by injecting the fuel in a finely divided state suspended in a cold carrier gas containing free oxygen into a heated retort and surrounding the fuel suspension with a veil of hot gases simultaneously introduced into the retort so that the fuel particles are coked to such a degree before reaching the walls of the retort that the residue finally collected does not agglomerate. The heated gases may be waste combustion products and a temperature of between 1200-1500‹C is maintained in the retort. A fuel gas may also be obtained by using pure oxygen as the cold carrier gas. In apparatus described the finely divided fuel is mixed with air or oxygen at the bottom of hoppers 1 and introduced into the retort 5 by the lines 4 and nozzles 6. Hot combustion gases from burners 10 are fed in through the annular spaces 9 and the coke produced is withdrawn from the base of the retort 5 through the line 18. Hot gases and entrained coke particles leaving the retort pass through a waste-heat boiler 21 and then through an electrostatic precipitator 26, finally leaving by the line 29.
