A gas containing H 2 , CH 4 , oxides of carbon and optionally N 2 , is made by a process which comprises heating a mixture of methane, e.g. natural gas, and steam in a stage which comprises at least one cyclically operated regenerator which is heated by combustion gases, and bringing the heated mixture into contact with a steam-reforming catalyst to reduce the CH 4 content of the mixture to the required value. Two or more regenerators may be employed in alternation, and the combustion ,gases are preferably recycled for controlling the temperature of the hot gases supplied to the regenerators. Two catalyst stages may be used in series, and air may be supplied to the reaction mixture before the regenerators, or between the regenerators and the catalyst, or between two catalysts. Operating pressures do not exceed 5 atmospheres, and preheat temperatures are in the range 600‹ to 800‹ C.
