Class 55 (2) In a process for making gas from liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons by reacting them with an oxidizing gas e.g. CO 2 or steam, in the presence of a readily oxidized and reduced catalyst, catalytic material rendered inactive by carbon deposited thereon is withdrawn from the reaction zone and regenerated by passing it, together with a gas containing free oxygen, through a regenerating zone, the carbon being burnt and the thus heated catalytic material being returned to the reaction zone. In one form, the apparatus consists of a reaction vessel 1, filled with a previously heated catalytic material comprising, for example, iron and nickel oxides. Steam and a hydrocarbon oil or gas enter vessel 1 through pipes 2 and 3 respectively, the oil gas generated discharging to storage through pipe 4. Carbon-contaminated catalyst is withdrawn continuously by a rotary valve 6 and is elevated by a mechanical lift 9 to pass through a valve 10 into a regenerating vessel 11 which is connected by a neck 5, sealed by steam from a pipe 7, to the top of vessel 1. Air from a blower 15 enters the top of vessel 11 and passes down with the catalyst, burning off the carbon thereon and thus heating the material to the reaction temperature required in the vessel 1. If this combustion does not generate sufficient heat, oil may be admitted through a pipe 18 to burn with part of the air in a chamber 13. The amount of air flowing through chamber 11 and its time of contact with the material are adjusted so that the carbon is burnt but the material is not further oxidized. The combustion gases discharge through a pipe 12 and pass through heat exchangers 17 for the combustion air and 20 for the reaction steam. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the reaction between the oil and steam is conducted in a fluidized bed of the catalyst and the regenerator zone consists of a standpipe up which the carbon contaminated catalyst is carried by the combustion air.
