Abstract

1434993 Burning fluent fuel ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP 11 May 1973 [12 May 1972] 22672/73 Heading F4B The effluent from partially burning a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon fuel with less than the stoichiometric amount of oxygen is mixed with the effluent from passing the same or a different liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon fuel over an oxidation catalyst with more than the stoichiometric amount of oxygen and combustion is completed. In a steam generator furnace, Fig. 1A, liquid fuel is fed to the lower part of the furnace with less than the stoichiometric amount of air. Gaseous fuel is fed to catalytic oxidation devices 60 with more than the stoichiometric amount of oxygen, and the gaseous products fed into the upper part of the furnace where the combustion is completed. The fuel and/or air may be fed to the furnace tangentially. Inert gas, such as recycled flue gases, is fed to furnace at 44, and a mixture of inert gas and air is fed to the furnace at 66. The exhaust gases contain little noxious gas, and the temperatures are maintained below that at which large amounts of oxides of nitrogen are formed. The fuels may be an aliphatic hydrocarbon, naphtha, kerosene, mineral oil, carbon monoxide or an alkanol. The catalyst is preferably platinum, finely dispersed on a ceramic carrier.
