Abstract

A cyclic process for the preparation of combustible gas by catalytic reforming of fluid hydrocarbons comprises a plant-heating period during which a hot gaseous medium is passed through a bed or mass of catalyst, and a gas-making period in which hydrocarbons, steam, and/or an oxidizing gasification medium are contacted with the bed or mass of catalyst, the hydrocarbons (two or more) being fed separately and successively, for a predetermined period, in order of increasing density. The predetermined period is based on the temperature decrease in the catalyst bed, overcracking being caused by too high a temperature. The catalyst may comprise a magnesia base and contain 2% to 5% of nickel. Fluid hydrocarbons exemplified are gaseous hydrocarbons, light distillate oil, and heavy fuel oil.
