Abstract

A fuel gas made by continuously reforming a hydrocarbon, e.g methane, with steam in externally heated catalyst filled tubes, is mixed with substantially sulphur-free flue gases and the mixture passed with steam over a catalyst to convert CO in the mixture to CO2. The flue gases may be those from the reformer, and the CO-conversion catalyst is chromia-promoted iron oxide. Gaseous hydrocarbon, e.g. methane, may be added to the converted gas. In an illustrated embodiment, a supply of methane is divided into three portions, namely: for gasifying, for heating the reformer, and for enriching the converted gas, and the hot flue gases serve to raise steam for the reformer before being compressed and mixed with the fuel gas.
