Abstract

1,159,826. Making combustible gas. MONTECATINI EDISON S.p.A. 15 Aug., 1966 [18 Aug., 1965], No. 36467/66. Heading C5E. A gas mixture containing H 2 and CO is made by partially combusting at 11 and then steamreforming a liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon at the same elevated pressure, the reforming being performed in catalyst-containing tubes 13 and gases from the partial combustion being introduced at 5, 12, into part of the hydrocarbon before the reforming step. The hydrocarbon feed 1 is divided at 2, 3 and recombined at 12 before entering catalyst-containing annuli 13 about return tubes 14. Some gas from the partial combustion is taken off at 6, 7 for mixing with air delivered to a burner 11 and for driving a turbine Tl which drives a turbo-compressor CR1 for combustion air. In one modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the line 6 and ejector EJ1 are omitted, superheated steam being delivered to the line 2 for temperature control of the partial combustion stage. In another modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), water is introduced into the air in line 10 and evaporated by heat in the gases in line 7.
