Abstract

1408832 Steam generation ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL CORP 1 May 1973 [12 May 1972] 20674/73 Heading F4A In a method of generating steam, a fuel comprising no sulphur or nitrogen (e.g. liquid natural gas) is burnt in an oxidising atmosphere containing no nitrogen to produce heat which passes in heat exchange relationship with water in a heat exchanger 6 to convert the water into steam while maintaining the water isolated from the products of combustion. As shown in Fig. 1 vaporized liquid oxygen is fed through a line 20 from a pro-combustion chamber 48. Vaporized liquid methane natural gas is fed through a line 34 to a combustion chamber 4, the mixture being ignited by an ignitor either in the chamber 4 or at the point 58 in a gas passage 50, the burning gas being passed through a passage 50 of the heat exchanger 6. If necessary, additional oxygen is fed through a conduit 52 and manifold 56 into the combustion chamber. Steam is produced in the heat exchanger 6 by passing water through a line 61 to an exhaust condenser 70, a line 60 and an inlet manifold 62. The steam produced then passes out through outlet manifold 66 to a line 68 leading to a steam turbine or other suitable means. A temperature and a pressure controller are provided in the gas and oxygen supply line to control automatically the flow of fuel through the lines to the chamber 4 and heat exchanger 6. If desired, a secondary heat exchange fluid such as liquid metal, organic fluid, carbon dioxide, mercury &c. may be used as intermediate heat exchange fluids between the combustion gases and the water.
