747,581. Distilling solid carbonaceous materials. SOC. DE TECHNIQUE INDUSTRIELLE. Oct. 12, 1953 [Oct. 14, 1952; Dec. 10, 1952; March 19, 1953 ; March 19, 1953], No. 28050/53. Class 55(1). In a process for effecting the low temperature distillation of coal and other carbonaceous materials the coal particles are continuously introduced into a vertical and. preferably rectangular retort 9 and mixed with a gaseous heating fluid heated to a temperature of the order of 1000‹C. introduced between baffles 5a into the upper part of the retort to form a suspension which descends down the retort and such that the mean temperature of the mixture is of the order of 500‹C., semi-coke and a mixture of heating fluid and distillation gases being continuously withdrawn from the base of the retort. A conveyer 13 withdraws semi-coke from the base of a hopper 11 and from the base of a cyclone separator 14, the gaseous products. leave through the separator 14 and a waste heat boiler 18. The hot gaseous fluid may be super-heated steam, recirculated distillation gas or as shown, combustion gases from a combustion chamber 1. Steam is introduced into the hot combustion gases at 4. The retort 9, the hopper 11 and separator 14 are surrounded by a chamber heated by a burner 16 and the retort 9 is provided with a series of baffles 10 to retard the descent of the larger particles of the coal.
