692,773. Coking and gasifying processes. USINES CHIMIQUES & METALLURGIQUES DE DECAZEVILLE. Aug. 10, 1949 [Aug. 16, 1948], No. 20833/49. Class 55(i) Carboniferous material, e.g. coal, brown coal, wood, oil shale, scattered into an enclosure from above crosses heated gaseous fluid jets blown laterally in so as to form a horizontal screen-like sheet whereby intimate contact is ensured for a very short time, the necessary heat for reaction being supplied substantially by the hot fluid. Coal from hopper 3 is pulverized and blown into a refractory retort 1 by steam jets 4; as it descends it encounters further horizontal sheets of steam, e.g. three if semi-coke is to be obtained at 400‹- 480‹C. A steam superheat of about 1500‹C is reached by combustion at the nozzles of gas and oxygen supplied by pipes 17, 18. The steam having already been preheated to about 400‹C in a heater 13 traversed by the oven gases after separation of solid particles in a cyclone 21. Condensates are removed at various stages of a fractionation tower 23 and the gas is collected in a holder 30 after removal of benzol in a scrubber 28. The semi-coke may be gasified in a second chamber similar to the retort. In the treatment of oil shale the lower jets may be of a nature to oxidize residual carbon after discharge of the oil.
