Powdered or granular heat carriers move in a cycle in which, after emerging from a chamber 1 in which they give up heat in the low temperature carbonisation or gasification of carbonaceous fuels, they enter a heating space 2 at a point remote from its bottom, are therein maintained in a fluidized state and heated by the combustion of fuel with air introduced into that heating space in quantities sufficient for fluidization and are then conveyed by the combustion gases through a conduit 3 merging into or joining the upper part of the heating space, the velocity of the gases in the heating space 2 being lower than those necessary in the conduit 3 for pneumatic conveyance of the heat carriers. The heat carriers are separated from the hot gases in a cyclone or other separator 4, before re-entering the chamber 1. Solid fuel, which may be the entrained residue of fuel treated in the chamber 1, or liquid or gaseous fuel, may be burnt in the chamber 2. Air is supplied through a conduit 7, and is evenly distributed over the base of the chamber 2 by a grating 8. The carbonisation or gasification process in the chamber 1 may be the production of water-gas from powdered fuel ; the gasification of powdered fuel by air, enriched if desired by oxygen, or by oxygen and steam and/or carbon dioxide ; the dry distillation of powdered fuel or the production of active carbon. Fuel to be degasified may enter the chamber 1 through a conduit 11, and the gas produced may flow out through a conduit 12. Steam, or a mixture of steam and air and /or oxygen, may be introduced through a conduit 13 below a roof 14.
