Class 55(i) In a fluidized process for the gasification of particulate solid carbonaceous fuels such as coal by means of steam and oxygen the particulate fuel is passed in succession through a series of zones so that it is preheated and subjected to a preliminary gasification in the absence of oxygen by means of hot gases from one or more subsequent zones in which it is subjected to gasification with steam and oxygen, and the fine particles of fuel entrained with the gases leaving the first zone are separated therefrom and gasified in at least a portion of the steam and oxygen to be used in the process, which steam and oxygen is then after separation of any residual ash introduced into the last of the gasification zones. In apparatus described three zones 1, 2 and 3 are provided and particulate fuel is fed into the zone 1 through a conduit 4, subsequently descending by conduits 15 and 17 into zones 2 and 3. Gaseous products leave by a line 6 and are treated in a cyclone separator 7, the separated fines being gasified by means of steam and oxygen supplied through lines 9 and 10 respectively, the mixture passing through a cyclone separator 11 for removal of residual ash before entering the zone 3. Additional steam is supplied through a line 18 and additional oxygen may be passed in through line 19. The process may be operated at atmospheric pressure or at pressures up to 50 at atmospheres and zones 2 and 3 may be maintained at temperatures of 800-900‹C and 1000-1100‹C respectively. Air or pure oxygen may be used and the residual ash may be separated by a cyclone separator from the gases rising from the zones 2 and 3 before they pass to the zone 1. Alternatively the zone 3 may be operated at a temperature, for example, above 1200‹C so that the residual ash melts and can be run off in the form of a slag. Specification 360,618 is referred to.
