Abstract
Reactor vessel contains several horizontal porous bases, one above another, through which vapour participating in the reaction can pass upwards. The granular material flows across each base from an inlet to an outlet, disposed alternately centrally and at the edge of the base. The heating fluid flows upwards through vertical straight smooth tubes passing through all the stages. The bases pref. have alternate central and peripheral overflows for the granular material. Gas produced in the reaction can be removed from each stage. The overflows pref. have openings at the level of the bases through which a small part of the granular material can escape, and the bases can be slightly inclined towards these. Reactor can be used for gasifying coal using steam, with heating by e.g. H coolant from nuclear reactor. The vertical arrangement of the bed in stages gives high degree of conversion, and enables the fluidised bed reactor to be mounted within the security vessel of a nuclear reactor having helium coolant.
