Abstract
<PICT:0919359/III/1> A cylindrical reaction vessel 1, provided in its bottom with an inlet pipe 2 for a fluidizing gas under pressure. The gas is distributed over the entire cross-sectional area of the vessel by means of a plate 3, containing a plurality of openings 7. On the plate 3 there is provided an area reduction means which covers the entire cross-sectional area of the reactor vessel, and which consists of a plurality of columns 4 which have square cross-section and are arranged in a square pattern. The total cross-section area of the columns thus amounts to 20-80% of the cross-sectional area of the reactor vessel and the height of the passageways defined by the area reduction means is 2 to 10 times its width. At the top the columns are suitably bevelled, the inclined surfaces having such an inclination that the material in the bed cannot rest on them. The fine-grained material to be treated in the reactor is charged through a supply pipe 8, and the treated material is withdrawn through a discharge pipe 9. The gas is withdrawn through a cyclone separator 10, provided with an inlet 11, a gas outlet 13, and a return pipe 12 for solid particles to the fluidized bed. Alternative forms of the area reduction means viz. mutually parallel walls 5 or partition walls 14 are described in Fig. 2 which is not shown.
