Abstract

A fluidized bed reactor, e.g. for roasting ores such as chalcopyrites, is provided with a series of tangential gas inlets above the intended level of the bed to provide a zone of restricted turbulence above said bed. As shown in the Figures, furnace 3 having an annular grate 4 is supplied with fluidizing gas by means of a series of tuyeres and with solids through inlet 7. The particles of the bed are removed by overflow through openings 9 in central tube 8, a slide 10 being used to cover such openings as may be desired and thereby regulate the height of the bed. Tangential gas inlets 13 supply additional gas, which may be twice as much as that introduced through the grate and result in three times the throughput. An adjustable baffle 12 deflects entrained coarser particles back into the bed. The projecting annular portion 11 and the conical top 14 to the outlet pipe serve to confine and stabilize the vortex above the bed. <PICT:0986842/C1/1>
