Abstract

517,354. Combustible gas mixtures. BOSSNER, F., and MANISCHKA, C. July 25, 1938, No. 22083. Convention date, July 24, 1937. [Class 55 (ii)] [Also in Group III] In the removal of carbon monoxide from town gas by steam catalysis in the presence of a contact substance which travels through a contact chamber and a separate regenerating oven at a substantially constant temperature, a principal and a secondary contact chamber are used structurally separate and which may be connected with each other in series or in parallel. A catalyst is used in the contact chamber connected with the regenerator, which will also remove the CO2 formed, such as ankerite. In the series connection, the plant comprises the principal contact chamber 1, secondary contact chamber 2, catalyst regenerator 3 heated by gas from a combustion chamber 8 which gas also passes through heat exchangers 6, 7, a waste heat boiler 5 heated by the hot de-poisoned gas and a final gas cooler 29. Steam from the boiler is supplied by injectors 9 and 10, to each of the gas streams entering the contact chambers. The circuit of the contact material between chamber 1 and the regenerator 3 is shown by the line of circles. In using the contact chambers in parallel, the gas to be purified is divided into two streams in such proportions that after each has been purified in the respective chambers, the gas on uniting has comparable calorific values with ordinary town gas. Since the CO 2 is not absorbed in the secondary contact chamber a small proportion thereof remains in the final gas. In a further modification of using the plant with the contact chambers in parallel different gases are passed through each, such as coal gas through the secondary contact chamber and semi-water gas through the principal contact chamber ; the CO as before is left in the gas after flowing through the secondary chamber. The gases are then united. The proportions of each gas to be purified are chosen to give a resulting gas of standard calorific value. Specification 473,575 is referred to.
