Abstract
<PICT:0360148/III/1> <PICT:0360148/III/2> In the process for the decomposition of gaseous hydrocarbons by steam described in the parent Specification, the regenerator for heating the air is divided into two parts, one of which is employed to heat the heating gas and the other the air for combustion. As shown in Fig. 1, the gas to be converted and the steam enter the reaction chamber 1 by pipes 2, 3 and the pipe 4 conveying the gases formed is divided into two branches leading to preheaters 5, 6 from which the gases leave by valved pipes 7, 8 to a common delivery pipe 12. Air and heating gas enter the regenerators by pipes 13, 14 and, after burning in the chamber 1, leave by a pipe 15. In operation, the pipes 7, 8 are closed, air and heating gas pass through the regenerators 5, 6, are burnt at the top of the reaction chamber 1 and passing downwards, leave by the pipe 15. Gas and steam enter by the pipes 2, 3, are decomposed in the reaction chamber and after passing through the regenerators 5, 6, leave by pipes 7, 8. Fig. 3 shows a tower 16 subdivided to form a reaction chamber 1 and regenerating chambers 5, 6 by partitions 20, 21 which do not extend to the top of the tower.
