Abstract

1479305 Furnace for cracking hydrocarbons STONE & WEBSTER ENG CORP 4 Oct 1974 [6 Nov 1973] 43232/74 Heading C5E A furnace 2 for thermally cracking hydrocarbons to produce olefins comprises process tubes through which the feed passes from the convection heated section 4, through a crossover section 8 and thence through the annular chamber 52 of the radiation-heated section 6; the radiation section is heated by a long flame burner 44 from which combustion gas is passed through the passage 58, through the chamber 52 (which has a cross-sectional area which decreases towards the burner 44), through the cross-over section 8 and through the convection section 4 to the outlet 22. As shown, the process tubes from the radiation section 6 pass into the annular chamber of a quench section 62 and the cooled cracked gases leave the furnace via the manifold 60; the combustion gas leaves the chamber 52 (e.g. at 1500‹ F.) and pass through the cross-over section 8 and through the convection section 4 together with combustion gas from the burner-32. Fig. 5 (not shown) illustrates ancillary apparatus in which the combustion gas (e.g. at 1200‹ F. and 5-15 atm.) leaving from outlet 22 is used to produce high pressure steam and is then used to preheat the hydrocarbon feed before being used as the quench medium in the quencher 62. Following use as quench medium, a portion of the combustion gas is passed to the burners 44 and 32 and a further portion is passed to a burner which powers a turbine. The cracked gas from the quencher is used to further preheat the hydrocarbon feed and then to produce steam for diluting the feed to be cracked.
