Abstract

333,192. Schaefer, H. Feb. 1, 1929. Metal-heating furnaces; air and gas heating furnaces; gases, supplying.-In a method of heating, a combustible gas raised to a high temperature in one element of a reversible gas heater, is passed through a chamber containing the materials or articles to be heated, after which it is mixed either with a supporter of combustion or a combustible gas, as the case may be, and burnt in the other element of the beater. The apparatus shown comprises chequer brickwork filled chambers 5, 17 connected on the one hand to the heating chamber 8 through passages 6, 7, and 10, 9, and on the other to a reversing-valve through the flues 3, 20. The gas to be burnt with that which has passed through The heating- chamber is supplied from a main 11 and is delivered through ports 16 to one or other of the chambers 5, 17 according to the phase of operation. By providing a connection 33 between the chambers 5, 17 hot gas which has not passed through the chamber 8 can be burnt in the chambers 5, 17, and by providing connections between the flues 3, 20, and the chambers 5, 17, respectively, cold gas can be supplied for combustion. The chambers 5, 17 may be arranged on opposite sides, or both on the same side of the chamber 8, and the waste gases from the heating-system may be passed through a recuperator. In a modification (Fig. 6 not shown) both gases are heated in reversible heaters, and in another modification (Fig. 10 not shown), part only of the gas from the heaters 5, 17 is passed through the chamber 8, while the remainder is burnt in an external flue. When the heating- chamber 8 is of the tunnel type, an end chamber may be provided into which one of the gases is passed for cooling the goods.
