Abstract

461,507. Refuse-consuming furnaces. NICHOLS ENGINEERING & RESEARCH CORPORATION. Aug. 16, 1935, No. 23081. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1934. Addition to 432,198. [Class 51 (i)] A modification of the process and apparatus for treating sewage sludge or like waste material described in the parent Specification consists in removing a substantial portion of the moisture from the material and then passing it downwardly and successively through a number of superposed zones where it is dried and subsequently burnt, the drying being effected by introducing preheated air at the upper zone, which air is then passed through the burning zones, whereby the gases and vapours evolved from the drying material and the gaseous products of combustion from the burning zones are heated to a high temperature for elimination of noxious odours. The Figure shows a furnace of the Herreshoff type to which the material is introduced through a charging opening 108 and is rabbled down over the hearths 101, 102 and through hearth openings 101a, 102a. A fan 111 draws gases through the passage 110 at the lower zone and such gases serve to heat air passing through the pipe 109 to the upper zone. Gas or oil may be supplied through nozzles such as 112 to the lower zone. Specification 22022/10, [Class 51 (ii)], is referred to.
