Abstract

1349910 Treating refuse MONSANTO CO 13 July 1971 [13 July 1970] 32887/71 Heading F4B Refuse is pyrolized in a rotary refractory lined cylinder 24, provided with hoods 36, 56 at each end to restrict the admission of air, the refuse being fed at one end where waste gases are extracted, and a burner providing an open flame 64 spaced from the walls of the cylinder is mounted at the other end where solid residues are extracted, heat conducting spikes or blades 66 agitating the material within the cylinder without substantial lofting. The residue falls into a quench tank 70, and from there is passed to a magnetic separator. Burners 44, 46 in the hood 36 prevent an explosive accumulation of gases, and the gases are passed to a secondary combustion chamber 84 with baffles 88 providing a tortuous path for the gases to an air preheater 96 and a spray washing apparatus 100. Material is fed from a shoot 48 to the furnace by a ram 52 to prevent ingress of air, and water from the quench tank 70 and the gas scrubber 100 is fed to a clarifier tank together with water used to wash recovered iron. The clarified water is utilized as make up water in the quench tank and gas scrubber, steam from the quench tank also being fed to the scrubber. Some of the heated air from the air preheater may be fed direct to atmosphere. The temperature of the reaction may be controlled by regulating the fuel and air supply to give satisfactory after burning of the waste gases and to keep the temperature in the pyrolysis chamber low enough to avoid slagging.
